"Cruces de Mayo" Festival of the Crosses
Annual event on May 3
The festival of the crosses is one of the most important festivals of Granada and its essence is a celebration of both the Christian faith as the arrival of spring. The history of this event involves the history of the Roman Emperor Constantine and hisconversion to Christianity.
Annual Festival held the week before Easter
Holly week is celebrated in Granada similarly to the celebrations in Seville and other Andalusia cities. The festival commemorates the life of Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection. There are parades and processions of religious art, along with other tributes that come out of all the churches of the city, following a path traced through downtown and then back to church.
Annual Event Mid-June
This festival was originally a celebration of the Catholic Church to honor the Eucharist (Thanksgiving or Holy Communion) and thus promote Christianity. Nine weeks after Easter, Corpus Christi Sunday is a procession dedicated to the Eucharist, but over the years, the theme of the festival has expanded to honor the Andalusian culture in general. Some even refer to the festival as a carnival.
